Challenge
The extraction of marble blocks is an activity with a very low effective material utilisation rate. Only about 30% of the mined material are usable blocks. The remaining 70% are elements of smaller dimensions that end up as rubble, of which only a small percentage is used as crushed stone for construction. Incorporating the circular economy approach into the extraction and processing of natural stone is an essential measure to increase the sustainability and efficiency of the sector, which is often characterised by intensive extraction and significant waste generation.
Circular design strategy
The SMARBLE project focuses on the development of a new product, taking into account the available resources and circular strategies. The new product is a high quality, durable product with a high product-user relationship, as each product is unique.
The value proposition focuses on sustainability by upcycling waste from marble extraction. In addition, the SMARBLE solution represents a significant reduction in CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining time, leading to a reduction in energy and water consumption and sludge production. Next to the significant reduction of initial raw material required, there is also a clear improvement in its use: the traditional bathtub, excavated from a solid block, only uses 14% of the material, while the bathtub made from quarry waste uses 34%. This includes transforming the waste into blocks and machining the bathtub.

Circular business model
Based on a classic long life business model, the company focuses on a customer segment that is concerned not only about quality and cost, but also about the environment and the use of natural raw materials.
The main customers, such as decorators and architects, will connect with the product due to its material and durability. This trust will lead to ongoing support for updates, maintenance, and repairs when needed, even after the sale. By meeting the demands of this discerning market, Formas de Pedra will position itself as a brand that prioritizes design and the value of natural by-products, strengthening both its reputation and products.
Results and follow-up
During a CIRCO Track, Formas de Pedra developed and explored different possibilities related to an earlier idea for this product and then developed the business model with the help of LNEG (involved in the CIRCO Hub Portugal). The product is now on the market. The same solution is applicable to different product families of Formas de Pedra.
“I am grateful for the help of the CIRCO Hub in checking every detail, in developing the project, in making it circular and for all the advice you have given us to improve it”
